Why do people still use Telegram?

With all the recent news about Telegram increasingly cooperating with government data requests, including sharing information on over 2,200 users with U.S. authorities in 2024 and even more in countries like India and across Europe, why do people still use it? It used to be seen as a privacy focused app, but now it's just giving up data just like the rest. At this point, how is it any different from the platforms people were trying to avoid in the first place?

'Private app' is a term that Telegram has long since shed. Many people still use it more for convenience or habit than because they really care about their privacy. The issue is that many people still think it's safe simply because "it's not from Meta," without knowing how it actually operates...

I guess for simplicity or habit, many people are of “habits” and do not change much the routine, also remains somewhat more private than other instant messaging applications, there are options that do not include other platforms, although I agree that there are better platforms.

Ig that's because tlg is (not talking abt OPsec or anything) is the most convenient messenger. When shit went down with Pavel Durov's lil stay in a french prison, I saw some communities and GCs attempting the switch to Signal, but some of them rolled back cuz of the lack of Channels, advanced permission management, identity (but now signal has "@ usernames" nowdays so fair) etc etc...

sadly it's still the best in terms of functionalities, channels, user base, etc. and people are just too lazy to learn to use another app or to renounce to fancy stickers
